Pistols with the left hand barrel having a sliding pan cover. Silver grotesque mask and silver wire inlay to grips. Other metal parts are light coloured brass. The trigger guards on these pistols are of steel and slide forward to form a safety catchThis very attractive pair of double barrelled pistols were built about 1770 - To load and fire these pistols the owner must dispense gunpowder down each of the 2 barrels then ram a ball on top of the powder using the ramrod which is retained beneath the barrels. The left had pan should be primed and the sliding cover pushed forward to hold the powder in the pan. The right hand pan is then primed and the frizzen put into its closed position. When the pistol is fired the right hand barrel ignites first - when the second shot is required the sliding pan cover is pulled back to allow the second shot. More...

Ref: D3833 CASED PAIR BLUNDERBUSS PISTOLS BY TAYLOR.An unusual pair of Brass barrel blunderbuss pistols by Taylor - 15.5" overall length, barrels measure 1" at the muzzle. Brass mounts, the stock has silver wire inlay behind the tang. The original oak case contains a cleaning rod, turnscrew, punch, mould and powder flask. The case has a trade label of Staudenmayer - I must assume that the pistols were retailed by Staudenmayer This pair of pistols would have been intended for self protection whilst travelling on a stage coach and date from about 1770. The proof marks, which are crossed sceptres beneath a crown and are typical of pre Birmingham proof marks and are normally attributed to Ketland who proved barrels in Birmingham prior to the opening of the Proof House in 1813.  | PAIR Flintlock pistols by Edwards Ref: D3489 CASED PAIR FLINTLOCK PISTOLS BY EDWARDSA very nice pair of Silver Mounted flintlock pistols by Edwards, 16.25" overall length, 17 bore. The silver mounts have Dublin hall marks. Barrels are engraved "Edwards Dublin". The case contains loading rod, patch cutter, bullet mould, turnscrew, brush, leather covered powder flask and mallet. Lots of history with this set relating to the original owner Charles H. Leslie. This pair of pistols were made for Charles H Leslie - he was the founder of the Ballincollig Gunpowder mills. He was born in 1762 in Cork City, he was admitted a Freeman of Cork in November 1784 at the age of 22. He married in September 1784 William Edwards was apprenticed to Matthew Collins and traded under the celebrated gunmaker TWIGG in London. We have a copy of an advertisement placed by Wm Edwards in Dublin Evening Post in January 1779 offering his services and advertising for an apprentice. More...
